Unreal Engine 4

In our search to streamline our animation process, we stumbled upon the gaming engine - Unreal Engine 4. While it's primary function is for gaming, it has the necessary tools for animation. The learning curve is steep, and the animation tools can be clunky, but the rendering time is incredible - not quite realtime, but close enough.

This is the first animation I created in Unreal. I also got the experience of rigging and driving the semi-truck as if I were playing a video game. The character animations come from mocap data we captured in our own studio.

Motion Capture

Earlier this year we set up our own motion capture studio, using Ipi Soft, a markerless motion capture system that uses an array of cameras to track an actor and then analyzes the footage to create the mocap data. This is the first animation I created using our own custom data (animated in Cinema 4D).

MSHA Animations

A collection of animations I created for various MSHA safety courses. This was a time before we were able to animate character's mouths, so I tried to carry the dialogue the best I could with body language. Made in Cinema 4D with a purchased mocap pack, which I adapted/animated over.

Incident Investigation

This was the first of a series of videos, which I wrote, illustrated by hand, and animated. The videos are woven through an Incident Investigation training course, telling the story of gumshoe safety supervisor Sam, as he investigates a mysterious workplace incident.

Active Shooter Response

I aided in creating this short film for Vivid Learning System's Active Shooter Response course. The film features a co-worker of mine and a former teacher of his, who were present during a school shooting. My roles involved leading the interviews, outlining the story, capturing B-roll, and editing the film.
The training course is free to any who wish to take it.
